So when, on the back of a highly positive forecast, I end up on the top of a hill under flat, grey skies, being tormented by several thousand midges, you can imagine my mood. Which is how it had been one summer’s evening, the last time I visited the Cobbler. But revenge is sweet, if not swift. And although I had to wait until late October for my repeat mission. <image:caption>Kintail With a positive forecast, the plan was to walk up mid-afternoon leaving plenty of time to pitch my tent high and then scout around for suitable viewpoints. But the weather turned bad and as I approached the undulating ridge leading to the summit, the wind whipped up and my Munro disappeared under an incoming squall. I wasn’t prepared to risk what could become a very uncomfortable night. Instead I decided I’d leave my very heavy rucksack and simply take myself and my camera up to at least bag my Munro. Of course, not long after leaving the summit the skies to the north began to clear and the prospects of some interesting late light brightened my mood. This was the view north as I made my way back along the high level ridge before descending to Loch Quoich. Kintail’s magnificent South Glen Shiel ridge glowing in the late, very welcome, evening sun. 30 x 15’’ £75 20 x 10’’ £45</image:caption>

Looking north to Kintail, you can see the full length of the impressive South Glenshiel ridge. To the south and east are the Loch Quoich peaks. However, it’s the views out west over Loch Hourn to Knoydart and the Western Isles of Eigg, Rùm and Skye that command attention. 30 x 12’’ £70 20 x 8’’ £40</image:caption>

<image:caption>Binnein Mor By far my favourite time to photograph is an hour or so before sunset, when the angle of light lowers and shadows lengthen. On this particular evening, I was high up on the summit of Binnein Mor, the highest point in the Mamores group of Munros. As the sun began to sink, I watched as the shadow of this huge bulk of a mountain as it stretched out for what seemed miles, over the Blackwater Reservoir and on over to distant Rannoch Moor. The only land yet to be engulfed was nearby Munro, Sgurr Eilde Mor. It’s scree ridden summit creating a beautiful curved beacon in an otherwise sea of shadow. 30 x 15’’ £75 20 x 10’’ £45</image:caption>

      <image:title>Prints - Each Time</image:title>
<image:caption>The Trossachs I have a soft spot for Beinn Each. Where, in January 2018, fate had it that I upgraded camera. There’d been a fresh fall of snow and I was keen to explore. Still relatively new to hillwalking, I decided to climb Beinn Each as it was a popular walk with a relatively obvious route. The snow was unusually deep and thankful that I wasn’t the first up, I tracked footprints all the way to the summit. It was a true bluebird day and the views were outstanding. So I clicked away and then made my way down. Not far from the bottom, I pulled out my camera for one last shot, only to find that the shutter button had disappeared somewhere between me and the last time I used it. 600m higher up. It wasn’t realistic to think I’d ever find that part again. Just as it wasn’t financially viable to replace it. So I waved farewell to my trusty, but limited Canon Powershot and made the decision to upgrade. This image is from the last time I had the pleasure of walking this lovely hill. On a slightly warmer day. Using my much improved equipment. But each time I’m near, I spare a thought for my wee shutter button. Wondering exactly where it lies. 30 x 12’’ £70 20 x 8’’ £40</image:caption>

<image:caption>Glen Coe This was my very first stitched panoramic image. It wasn’t planned. I just didn’t have a wide enough lens capture the scene in one shot. It was January 2019 when I found myself in Glen Coe, trudging up the lower slopes of Beinn a’Chrulaiste wondering what all the fuss was about. This was supposed to be a photographer’s dream location but the first stretch had been uninspiring and exceptionally boggy. As the ridge became better defined and the drone of the A82 subdued, the views began to open up. But it wasn’t until I arrived at the top of Stob Beinn a’Chrulaiste that it suddenly hit me why this hill has become a Mecca for landscape photographers. There in front of me, Buachaille Etive Mor in all her glory. 30 x 15’’ £75 20 x 10’’ £45</image:caption>

<image:caption>Buidhe Beinn When I’m feeling tired I often distract myself by making out shapes in the clouds. Today the sky was almost clear, but I still found plenty to take my mind off the grind. As I paused for a break on the rock-strewn slopes of Buidhe Bheinn, I couldn’t help but feel that I was sitting amongst, what appeared to be giant tombstones and that I my presence might not be welcome. I quickly turned my attention towards Loch Hourn. 30 x 15’’ £75 20 x 10’’ £45</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lochnagar A cairn is often the only evidence that you’ve actually arrived at the summit of many of the Cairngorm mountains. The upper plateau is so vast and the gradients so subtle. Lochnagar is a notable exception. The walk-in to Lochnagar is for the most part relatively mundane, with few hints of what’s to come. But when the magnificent northern corrie finally comes into view, it is a truly awe-inspiring sight. I was fortunate enough to witness Lochnagar on a perfect winter’s day, under immense skies, sprinkled with a coating of fresh snow. 30 x 12’’ £70 20 x 8’’ £40</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Mamores Considering it’s dwarfed by many of its neighbours, the Pap of Glencoe offers some of the finest views in the Scottish Highlands. And don’t let it’s modest stature fool you, it’s a very well-earned summit. Especially if you climb it more than once in the same day. This was the case one January morning when I neared the top only to be forced down by strong winds and near zero visibility. An hour later, and a few hundred metres lower, the clouds dispersed, the wind dropped and I began my re-ascent. This was the very well-earned view across Loch Leven to the wonderful snow-capped Mamores mountain range. 30 x 15’’ £75 20 x 10’’ £45</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ben Vane Ben Vane is the smallest of all the Munros, but don’t ever tell it that less it bites your legs (I’ve heard it referred to as a wee terrier and much worse). The fearsome reputation comes from steepness of ascent and the number of false summits it possesses. So many so, it can really make a grown walker weep. I know. The left section of this image shows the normal line of ascent. 30 x 12’’ £70 20 x 8’’ £40</image:caption>

      <image:title>Prints - The Lost Glen</image:title>
<image:caption>Spidean Mialach The walk up Gleouraich is exceptional. The views out towards Knoydart are truly immense. But the evidence of human activity below means you never completely lose the connection with civilisation. It’s not until you traverse the summit ridge towards Spidean Mialach that you truly experience wilderness. Between the craggy ridge and the Kintail peaks to the north is Glen Loyne. A wild and desolate place at the best of times. Add swirling cloud, dramatic lighting and the eerie sound of deer rutting far below, and you feel like you have entered a lost world. 30 x 12’’ £70 20 x 8’’ £40</image:caption>

<image:caption>Meikle Pap The vast majority of my hillwalking has been in the western Highlands. The hills are more accessible from my home and their general ruggedness offers a myriad of photographic opportunities. But what the eastern, and in particular the Cairngorm, ranges have to offer are panoramic landscapes and endless skies on a scale that lowers the jaw just as naturally as any razor sharp ridge. Most definitely a cloud watcher’s paradise. This is the view from Meikle Pap, looking down towards Glen Muick. 30 x 15’’ £75 20 x 10’’ £45</image:caption>

      <image:title>Prints - The Approaching Light</image:title>
<image:caption>Sgorr nam Fiannaidh Patience is a virtue. For a photographer of landscapes, especially mountains, it’s non-negotiable. Not for the first time, I stood on top of a mountain wondering whether my long drive and arduous climb had been in vain. Today, I was in Glen Coe and despite the unusually warm conditions, a bank of obstinate cloud had dragged itself in front of the sun and wasn’t going anywhere fast. There was a gentle breeze coming in from the east and I watched as a patch of sunlight moved ever closer, across the vast expanse of Rannoch Moor and eventually Glen Coe itself. <image:title>Prints - Above Loch Lomond</image:title>
<image:caption>Ben Lomond Ben Lomond is a popular mountain. It’s close to Glasgow, offers a relatively easy walk, and in favourable conditions, panoramic summit views. But for a little extra effort, there’s far more to the most southerly of Scotland’s Munros than its summit. I don’t have formal figures but I would estimate 95% of the 30,000 people each year who climb Ben Lomond don’t realise there’s more than one path to choose from. And that by choosing the path of slightly more resistance you can enjoy views throughout your journey, as opposed to simply the finale. This is the view over Loch Lomond to the Arrochar Alps from the Ptarmigan Ridge. The path less trodden. 30 x 15’’ £75 20 x 10’’ £45</image:caption>

      <image:title>Prints - Sunset on Sgurr a’Mhaoraich</image:title>
<image:caption>Loch Quoich My first visit to Loch Quoich was in Autumn 2019 when I climbed Gleourach and Spidean Mialach. It was a fantastic day. Spectacular summits linked by a fine ridge walk. What made it even better was the quality of the paths. A real delight to walk. Fast forward several months and an eagerly anticipated re-visit. I knew my target for the day, Sgurr a’Mhaoraich, benefited from an equally excellent path. So I headed up, loaded with a heavy backpack, with the intention of high camping. But things didn’t go to plan. An hour into the walk and I was already feeling the strain (a 17kg load surely merits a Sherpa). 3o minutes later the first squall blew in. Followed by another… and another. The final straw came when I hit the first top, only to see two massive descents and re-ascents before the final climb to the summit. I simply lost the will. Leaving my rucksack behind, I traveled light the rest of the way. Simply me and my camera. And after an hour of hanging about on the summit, I returned to my bag and wandered, heavy heartedly, back along the ridge. But as I walked, I was aware of a brightening of skies. So, not for the first time that day, I dropped my heavy load and headed, with camera in hand to the highest point available. And as with all good stories, there was happy ending. 30 x 12’’ £70 20 x 8’’ £40</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stuc a'Chroin Stuc a’Chroin was one of my first hill walks. Like most people I combined it with partner Munro, Ben Vorlich and I have to admit to not enjoying the experience from the unusually busy path up Ben Vorlich, to the slippery scramble up Stuc a’Chroin, and the monotonous muddy trudge back down to the still busy path. My experience of nearby Corbett, Beinn Each couldn’t have been more different. I left it late and although I met one or two folk, they were all heading in the opposite direction. By the time I reached the summit much of the lower land was in shade. And low and behold, there in front of me was Stuc a’Chroin, looking majestic in the late evening sun. How could I have hated that hill so much? 30 x 12’’ £70 20 x 8’’ £40</image:caption>

<image:caption>Conival Steep-sided, bizarrely shaped, and separated from one another by a myriad of fresh-water lochans, Assynt’s mountains are truly unique. They’re also unusual in the fact that the smaller they are, the more attention they receive - Stac Pollaidh and Suilven being the most obvious cases in point. Which is kind of sad as the two highest peaks, and only Munros, merit exploration. The summit views are expansive from both Conival and Ben More Assynt (be warned, the connecting ridge is rough going). But for me the highlight was upon reaching the bealach between Conival and nearby, Beinn an Fhurain. It’s the first glimpse of Scotland’s great north wilderness. It took an excruciating amount of time for the patch of light to travel from Rannoch Moor to where I was standing. The sun desperately trying to stay afloat as the clouds sauntered lazily towards the western horizon. It did eventually reach me, along with the Mamores and Aonachs to the north, almost an hour after first lighting up Glen Coe’s eastern peaks. 30 x 15’’ £75 20 x 10’’ £45</image:caption>

<image:caption>Meall nan Tarmachan In Scotland our winters are often as disappointing as our summers. In summer we hope for sun but instead get rain. In winter we hope for snow but instead get more rain. There are occasional years that buck the trend but winter 2019/20 wasn’t one. It was grey and mild. And the little snow that did fall quickly melted away, along with my hopes of any enjoyable winter walking. It was literally the last day of the year when an encouraging forecast prompted a journey up to the Ben Lawers range in search of some fresh air and some fresh photography. I’d worked out that if I was near the summit of Meall nan Tarmachan at 4pm, I could capture an image of the sun as it set over the iconic peak of Meall Garbh. Leaving me plenty of time for a quick descent back to my car and home before any tortuous Hogmanay rituals began. It’s great when a plan works. 30 x 12’’ £70 20 x 8’’ £40</image:caption>

<image:caption>Garbh Beinn, Ardgour I vividly recall standing at this exact spot during one of my early outings in 2018. It was late spring, but the high ground still held a thick covering of snow and the lochan below was bound in ice. I was blown away with the view and took a few very average snaps before scurrying off to continue my walk. In those days, although keen, I couldn’t class myself as a competent photographer. Since then my priorities have changed. I no longer aspire to bagging Munros preferring my capturing to be done by camera. I vowed to return to see if I could capture a more satisfying image. Just over two years later, I revisited. My intention being to capture Sgurr Eilde Mor at sunrise when the brightening sky, reflected in the lochan, would provide contrast with the silhouetted mountain. It was an early start but very rewarding. Helped in the fact that my bed was only a matter a metres from my viewpoint. That’s competence. 30 x 18’’ £80 20 x 12’’ £50</image:caption>

<image:caption>Creach Bheinn To catch sunrise during summer in Scotland takes commitment. To catch it at the top of a mountain takes a touch of madness. That was my mindset at 5.30am when this eagerly anticipated event was swallowed up by unannounced and definitely unwelcome clouds. Wind back 4hrs to the sound of my alarm and the auto-pilot check of the forecast to see uninterrupted yellow dots. Reassured, I make my way to the walk’s starting pint, just north of Druimnavuic in Appin. Sure enough, the stars are out and head-torch on I make my way up the track towards my destination, Corbett, Creach Bheinn. The walk requires little navigation and apart from a steep section leading to the summit ridge, it’s pretty easy going. And all the time, the brightening sky shows no sign of filling in. So, back to 5.30am and the sunrise that never was. As is my way, I decided to sit things out, more in hope than expectation, to see if something might happen to make my efforts worthwhile. Some time later, as if to reward my persistence, the sun appeared for a fleeting moment before disappearing once again behind a bank of equally persistent cloud. 30 x 18’’ £80 20 x 12’’ £50</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stob Dubh Definitely one of the most intense mountain days I’ve experienced. It was late November and I was in Glen Coe climbing Buachaille Etive Beag. It’s a reasonably short outing and I’d given myself plenty of time to cover both Munros well before dark. What I hadn’t planned on was the fickle overhead conditions. To be safe, I decided to take on Stob Dubh first as my last winter attempt had ended in failure due to a pair of invisible crampons (a story for another day). Overhead conditions were good and the views south along Gen Etive were fine. But I had my sights set on something else and made my way back to the bealach. By this time the wind had whipped up and the clouds were racing in, causing me to question the wisdom of taking on my second Munro, Stob Coire Raineach, and my big plan for the day - a high level, low light, shot back to Stob Dubh. But I had time and I wasn’t prepared to give in too early. An hour later, with zero visibility and the light fading fast, I decided to call it a day and head down. But about 50 metres from the summit the skies briefly cleared and behold, there was Stob Dubh, literally smouldering like an unstable volcano. Intense times. 30 x 12’’ £70 20 x 8’’ £40</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ben Lomond I love a good sunset. But by my own admittance I struggle photographing them. Finding far more success with side-lit scenes. Nowadays, when I plan a shoot, I tend to concentrate my efforts on the period before sunset as opposed to sunset itself. And if the opportunity arises for a shot into the sun, then I’ll take it as a bonus. This was my mindset on a sticky July evening on Ben Lomond. I was approaching via the Ptarmigan ridge and had been keeping an eye on the clouds as they enveloped and released the summit with monotonous regularity. As I gained height, I searched out suitable viewpoints and banked several lovely side-lit shots. Suitably satisfied, I decided to move to the summit in the hope that the cloud that now seemed settled would move away one last time. Soon after topping out, I was greeted with a remarkable show of light. And as the sun and cloud played hide and seek, I managed to sneak some wonderfully atmospheric shots. 30 x 15’’ £75 20 x 10’’ £45</image:caption>

<image:caption>Binnein Mor Spring 2020 was tough. The weather was glorious but I, like every other law abiding citizen, was stuck on the inside looking out. Even harder to bear was that when we were all finally let loose, the sun decided to self isolate. But then came August. And after one or two false starts, conditions became settled and I finally felt ready to return to high places. My first wild camp of the year was high above Kinlochleven, in the Mamores. I spent the evening on the summit of Binnein Mor watching the sun set behind Ben Nevis. After so long, it was a truly humbling experience. Feeling very fortunate, I began to wander down but as if to say, you deserve this, the sky put one final display. A grand finale to a truly spectacular show. 30 x 15’’ £75 20 x 10’’ £45</image:caption>

<image:caption>Binnein Beag Both in the Mamores group of mountains and both Munros, there’s less than 200m difference in height between Binnein Mor and Binnein Beag. So it’s one of those grand illusions when you stand on top of either and try to surmise just how the other one looks so incredibly big, or so incredibly small. This was the view from the summit of Binnein Mor on a glorious August evening. The late sun catching the steep, scree covered slopes of the diminutive, Binnein Beag.
